Rotate PDF pages (complete guide)

Rotation fixes page orientation without changing the content. It’s common for scanned documents to come in sideways (90°) or upside-down (180°). Rotating pages is usually lossless because it updates the page rotation metadata rather than re-rendering every pixel.

Choose the right rotation

  • 90° clockwise: most common for sideways scans.
  • 180°: for upside-down pages.
  • 270° clockwise: same as 90° counter-clockwise.

When to rotate in your workflow

  1. If you will merge documents, you can rotate either before or after merging. For fewer mistakes, rotate first.
  2. If you will compress a scanned PDF, rotate first, then compress (so you verify readability at the correct orientation).
  3. If you need to remove blanks or reorder, do that after rotation: Remove pages, Rearrange pages.

Suggested workflow

  1. Check page count with PDF info.
  2. Rotate by 90/180/270 as needed.
  3. Verify: spot-check a few pages that were wrong before.
  4. Optimize size with Compress PDF (and Grayscale PDF for scans).

Troubleshooting

  • Pages are still sideways: you likely picked the wrong direction. Try 270° instead of 90°.
  • Only some pages need rotation: rotate the document, then remove/extract pages if you need separate versions.
  • Encrypted PDF: unlock first with Unlock PDF (requires password).

How it works

  1. Upload a PDF.
  2. Select rotation direction (90/180/270).
  3. Download the rotated PDF.
